The committee in charge of reviewing the smoking policy is closer to having a recommendation for President Nietzel.

The Campus Tobacco Use/Smoking Advisory Committee, headed by vice president of student affairs Earle Doman, was created back in September to look into what changes should be made to the existing policy based on campus attitude.

Doman said the report was only a recommendation for use by the president, and Nietzel will decide what action to take.

At the Student Government Association's town hall forum, committee member Jon Stubblefield said the committee will likely suggest that the campus first have designated areas for smokers and eventually be tobacco-free by 2012.

The committee is trying to put things on paper right now, and Doman said he is confident they will be able to make the president's Dec. 15 deadline.

He said it would be inappropriate to discuss the committee's decisions so far, and the president should be the first to hear their findings.

"I don't want to be super secretive on (the recommendation). I just feel it is the appropriate way to go," Doman said.

Doman didn't know if the committee was going to be in total agreement, but said they were going to produce a document they were confident in.

"We've hashed and re-hashed different stances," he said. "We've done a lot of research and talked about a lot of things at the town hall meetings. We're to the point now of deciding where to go."

Doman said the president's decision to resign will not impact the value of the recommendation, and the president is still going to be around long enough to take action.

Stubblefield said the committee will likely only meet a couple more times, and the last meeting will be held on Nov. 23.
