Kirkwood smoking ban "not too bad" restaurant owner says KMOX News 1/14/2010
KIRKWOOD (KMOX) -- It's two weeks since this town's new smoke-free ordinance took effect, and Paul Cartier says there's a different clientele coming into P.J.'s Tavern.
"A lot of new faces, a lot of big families and groups that we probably didn't have before that we're getting in now," he says. "Pick up a little more on the restaurant side and lose a little bit of the bar business."
He says many of his newest customers are non-smokers from Webster Groves.
Sales used to be 65-percent food; now they're 70-percent. Weekends, he says, used to slow down after the first of the year; now they're packed. The post-10 o'clock bar rush is where he says he's taking a hit.
Cartier thinks those without food to fall back on are feeling the pinch. He hopes to recover some of those people when all of St. Louis County goes smoke-free next year.
As for his bottom line: Cartier says he'll probably finish the year down versus last.. but not by much.
